Newark (EWR) Airport Guide, about 14 miles (20 km) and 35-50 minutes from Manhattan, is located partially in each Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. NEWaRk (that’s where the EWR comes from) hubs include Continental and United, and is used for both domestic and international flights. It is the oldest major airport in the United States, though it is modern and updated. A taxi to or from Midtown can cost anywhere from $60-$120, depending on in or outbound for up to 4 people.
There are some great hotel choices near EWR, making the local hotels much nicer than those located near LGA or JFK. These hotels are great for those on layovers, departing early, arriving late or attending a Giants/Jets game or concert at MetLife Stadium. Each of these hotels offers a free shuttle to and from EWR and usually, easy access to Manhattan from the Path train.
Reader Question: Are there Hotels with FREE shuttles into Manhattan?
NYC Insider Guide Answer: No. There are almost no hotels in NYC that offer free shuttles into Manhattan. I say almost, just in case I’ve missed something, but really, the answer is none. There are free shuttles to most of the hotels near the airports, but not to Manhattan hotels.

As you can see, EWR generally has the highest transportation costs of the three major NYC airports, since taxis charge an extra fee to leave Manhattan (it’s lower cost to enter NYC from NJ than to leave it). Whether you choose taxi, town car, shuttle or public transportation is your choice depending on the number of people and how much luggage you have.

EWR offers metered taxi cab rates, which means they are dependent on the time, speed and distance from start to destination. Additionally, Newark has a separate New Jersey-based taxi service than Manhattan yellow cabs. All the apps (Uber, Lyft, etc) are the same at all airports. During rush hours, you may be better off with a fixed rate town car or shuttle bus, as the traffic may cost you extra.
