La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Otello, Don Giovanni
The Metropolitan Opera is one of our most beloved landmark cultural institutions. From Madame Butterfly, the tragic tale of a woman betrayed, to La Boheme, the Puccini masterpiece that inspired the Broadway hit Rent, a night at the Metropolitan Opera is nothing short of exquisite.
From the moment you see Lincoln Center, to the outside of the Opera House, to inside the glorious theater…I guarantee you will be awestruck by the beauty of the buildings as well as the performances. If you are a TV or movie buff, then surely you are already familiar with NYC’s famous opera house.

Metropolitan Opera Theater Ticket Tips
Generally speaking, lower sections provide better visuals and higher sections offer better acoustics.
- Orchestra – With more than 1,500 seats, this is the largest section of the opera house and offers an unparalleled view of the stage.
- Parterre – The most luxurious Met experience, with each Center Parterre box seats eight.
- Grand Tier – offers an excellent view of the stage with outstanding sound.
- Dress Circle – Three levels above the ground, offers a combination of view and value.
- Balcony – direct view of the stage and remarkable acoustics
- Family Circle – The highest section in the auditorium, with sound that’s cited by many opera lovers as the best in the house. However, binoculars are recommended.
- Tickets: the Met has many affordable programs, for younger folks, students, same day tickets, rush tickets and more.

Metropolitan Opera Tips
- Dress Code – Like Broadway, officially, there is no dress code and no one will kick you out. You will likely see people in jeans and sneakers. But, this is THE OPERA…you don’t have to dress like Julia & Richard in Pretty Woman, but a jacket for the men and a dress for the ladies is quite appreciated.
- Bring binoculars if you choose a higher section. Last I checked, they are also available to rent.
- Every spot in the opera house has a small seat-back screen featuring subtitles in multiple languages, making it simple to follow along with the onstage action, regardless of the language of the performance.
- Familiarize yourself with your chosen opera beforehand, if possible. Learn the story. While the lyrics are beautiful, and much of the story is conveyed through the beautiful performances, I find I appreciate the Opera more when I know the story. The Met posts photos and videos of all their performances online.
- Arrive a bit early to enjoy the exhibitions in the lobby gallery. On a nice night, make sure to take a few minutes to view the Lincoln Center Plaza from the balcony.
- Food and Drink is available pre-theater and during intermission. See Lincoln Center for nearby spots
- If you wish to leave the house during intermission, be sure to obtain a re-entry ticket.
