You’ll notice many of the boutique and department stores unique to NYC will have the most distinctive selection when shopping in New York City, since they only have to stock their one or two stores – no mass ordering, trucking, warehousing, etc.
This allows them the ability to work with emerging designers, locally and globally, even highlighting young, but talented designers, from our world famous Fashion College, FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) and the TV Show, Project Runway.

Here are highlights and brief descriptions on Shopping in New York City at Department Stores…
Bloomingdales is an overall great department store, easy to navigate, great sales, good designer selection for teens and up. The main store has everything: babies, kids, teens, trendy and super luxury designers and housewares. The SoHo store is smaller, but hip and trendy.

In 2019, NYC welcomed its very first Nordstrom store in Midtown. Nordstrom offers 7 floors and 320,000 square feet of shopping, restaurants, cocktail bars, beauty services and tons of other exquisite luxuries. Have the cobbler work on your shoes, while the tailor is perfecting your new jeans to your exact shape, while sipping cocktails and ordering food to where you are in the store! The store boasts 100,000 pairs of shoes, 10,000 tubes of lipstick, and 6,000 pairs of jeans for starters…

Bergies is one of my favorite stores (especially now that we’ve lost Barney’s and Bendies)! Highlights are the cosmetic selection, spacious store, lots of up and coming designers, very helpful staff and organized with little boutiques by brand, like mini-stores within a store. The men’s store is huge and a separate building across the street.

Saks has, hands down, the best shoe department on the planet. They even have their own zip code (10022-SHOE). Excellent dress selection, very large store.

While we all have a soft spot in our heart for the landmark, Macy’s, founder of the most famous Thanksgiving Day Parade and backdrop of the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” this store is huge (2 city blocks, 9 Floors), crowded, in a congested area with little else around it and lacking sales staff.

Neiman Marcus (same owners as Bergdorf’s) opened it’s first NYC store in 2019 at the "Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards." It is a 188,000 square foot store spanning three floors and indulges visitors in luxury. Along with the world’s most elite designer brands, the store offers foodies The Zodiac Room, Bar Stanley, Cook & Merchants and a fresh Chocolate Bar. NM also showcases interactive fitting rooms, digital and in-person consultations at their Digital Styling Lounge and hair, nail, brow, and makeup services at BLVD. Other stores in the Shops and Restaurants include Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Cartier, Chanel, Coach, Dior, Fendi, H&M, Kate Spade, Sephora and many more.

Barney’s – my other favorite department store! Stocked with unique merchandise, first to market many new designers, amazing shoes, very nice staff, excellent dining at Fred’s on the 9th floor. Barneys New York has two CO-OP locations, which are smaller, but also carry great merchandise.

Lord and Taylor has elegant and stylish merchandise, plus a great dress selection for all ages. Best suited for the over-40 crowd (it was my Grandmother’s favorite back in the day!) 424 5th Ave, 38th/39th

Bendels is great for new designers and cosmetics (they discovered what is now Créme de La Mer before Estée Lauder did!). The store is chic, young and urban with the Frederic Fekkai salon on the fourth floor. 712 5th Ave, 55th/56th
